About

Held on 20-21 of January 2026, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) training in Ljubljana, Slovenia, was a unique capacity building opportunity for 34 committed urban transport specialists.

The event included a total of 9 training modules (3 core and 6 electives) on SUMP-related topics that provided a detailed overview of the challenges and best practices in establishing SUMPs.

The training began with introductions by Ms Polona Demšar Mitrovič at the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy, along with the Head of the EIB Group Office in Slovenia, Mr Simon Savsek, followed by a tour de table. The training was provided by Tom Rye, Christiaan Kwantes and Mark Finer.

During the first day trainees enjoyed training on the basics of SUMP methodology and practice, studied spatial planning and discussed urban nodes and the interface between local and strategic transport. The day finished with discussions on demand management and active modes and micromobility.

The second day covered sessions on collective passenger transport and the link between strategic plans, programming, pipeline and project preparation. The afternoon offered a detailed review of inclusive and accessible mobility, and road safety and street design, before the final wrap-up and conclusions.
