About

Held on 25-26 of January 2026, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) training in Bratislava, Slovakia, was a unique capacity building opportunity for 32 committed urban transport specialists.

The event included a total of 9 training modules (3 core and 6 electives) on SUMP-related topics that provided a detailed overview of the challenges and best practices in establishing SUMPs.

The training began with introductions by State Secretary Ms Denisa Žiláková, followed by a tour de table. The training was provided by Kristina Gaučė, Christiaan Kwantes and Mark Finer.

During the first day trainees enjoyed training on the basics of SUMP methodology and practice, studied road safety and street design and discussed indicators, targets and monitoring. The day finished with discussions on SUMPs for small and medium-sized cities and urban nodes and the interface between local and strategic transport.

The second day covered sessions on the link between strategic plans, programming, pipeline and project preparation and organisational and institutional aspects. The afternoon offered a detailed review of climate change and resilience, and collective passenger transport, before the final wrap-up and conclusions including contribution from Radovan Slávik, National SUMP Contact Point for Slovakia.
